Why more churches are following the church calendar
Something is shifting. Over the past two or three years we’ve watched the pendulum swing. Churches that used to want neon Christmas graphics and smoke machine energy are asking for stained glass, old hymn type, and Advent candles.
And it’s not just liturgical churches. It’s Baptist churches. Non-denominational churches. Some of our edgiest, most risk taking churches. Churches of two and three thousand people are intentionally choosing stained glass for Christmas. Brand new church plants are reciting liturgy together every Sunday morning.
You’re not the first church to move toward a liturgical style. It’s becoming the norm.
What’s behind it
Honestly? Gen Z. They don’t want the fluff, the fog, and the gimmicks. If they want a concert, they’ll go to a concert. They want church to feel like church.
We hear the same thing from pastors. For a long time the question was how to make church look like everything else. Now the question is how to make church look different. People are hungry for something rooted. Something older than this week’s trends. And it works across generations too. Millennials and Boomers love a little nostalgia.

How to lean in without losing your brand
- Go old school, but make it new school. Stained glass was made to tell the story to people who couldn’t read. You can tell the story the same way today, with a modern twist.
- Group the year into color seasons. Pick four or five color groups that fit your brand. Purple for Lent. Green for Ordinary Time and new life. Red or orange for Pentecost. You don’t have to abandon your brand colors to do it.
- Design the seasons as packs. Make Lent, Palm Sunday, Good Friday, and Easter feel like one family. Same with Epiphany into Lent.
- Give people something to hold. An Advent devotional booklet with a reading for each day, plus a kids version and family questions, goes a long way.
- You don’t have to call it liturgical. A printed calendar of the church year works great in a lobby or an annual booklet. Call it whatever fits your people.
Creative director tip
Christ the King Sunday, the last Sunday before Advent, is a great place to start. It can look very traditional in a cool way, and it gives you a natural bridge into your Advent series.
The 2027 church year at a glance
The church year doesn’t start in January. It starts with Advent. So the 2027 church year began on November 29, 2026, and it’s Year B in the Revised Common Lectionary. Year C begins on November 28, 2027.
January to December 2027: Christmas, the season after Epiphany, Lent, Easter, Pentecost, Ordinary Time, Advent, and Christmas again.

What the liturgical colors mean
Purple
Repentance, preparation, and royalty. Lent, and Advent in many churches.
Lent, AdventBlue
Hope and waiting. A lot of churches use blue for Advent so it feels different from Lent.
AdventWhite and gold
Joy, celebration, and the light of Christ. The big feast days.
Christmas, EasterRed
The fire of the Holy Spirit and the blood of Christ.
Pentecost, Palm SundayGreen
Growth and life. The ordinary, everyday work of following Jesus.
Ordinary TimeBlack
Grief and mourning. Some churches strip the colors entirely.
Good FridayThe church calendar gives your design a rhythm. Your people feel it before they can name it.
Using the liturgical colors in your design
- Use the color as an accent, not a rule. A Lent series doesn’t have to be all purple. A purple thread through the art connects it to the season.
- Carry one color everywhere. Slides, social, print, and stage should feel like the same season.
- Plan the big seasons early. Start Lent and Easter art in December, and Advent art in September.
- Know your tradition. Colors vary by denomination, so check your own calendar for the details.
Creative director tip
Easter is early in 2027, March 28. That means Ash Wednesday is February 10, only a few weeks into the new year. Have your Lent and Easter art approved by late January so invites can go out 4 to 6 weeks before Easter.
