Church Anniversary and Birthday Ideas

from real celebrations, big and small

A church anniversary is one of the few Sundays where everybody looks back and forward at the same time. The best church anniversary ideas do both. They honor the story, and they invite people into what’s next.

We’ve helped churches celebrate everything from a 2nd birthday to a 135th anniversary. Here’s what we’ve seen work, with real examples from churches we work with.

Anniversary or birthday? Pick the feeling first

This sounds small, but it changes everything. “Anniversary” tends to feel formal: history, gratitude, maybe a banquet. “Birthday” feels like a party: color, cake, photos, kids running around. Neither is right or wrong. Just decide which one fits your church before anyone opens a design file.

Anniversary

Milestone years like 25, 50, or 100. Legacy, gratitude, long-time members, a dinner or banquet.

Classic, timeless

Birthday

Younger churches and plants. Celebrating the people who are here now, and the next year.

Colorful, fun

Give the milestone its own logo

The LH50 logo suite for Living Hope Baptist Church’s 50th year.

Living Hope Baptist Church planned a whole year of celebration for their 50th, with stories, events, and a year of sermon series built around a stained glass window. At first we tried to force the stained glass into the logo too. Four rounds in, the team realized it didn’t need to be there. Let the anniversary mark stay simple, and let the campaign art carry the texture. The final “LH50” mark uses their existing icon, their brand blue, and a short tagline.

Make merch and graphics that match

The Bridge Fellowship’s 20th landed right in the middle of a building campaign, so they tied the two together instead of competing for attention. Part of it was a preorder tee with a collegiate crest, the number 20, and “The Legacy Continues,” sized for kids and adults in three shirt colors. A preorder means you only print what people actually want. And when the shirt, the slides, and the social posts all share one look, the whole celebration feels connected.

Throw a themed banquet

For 135 years of ministry in Chicago, Ravenswood Baptist paired a worship service with an evening banquet in a theater space with black walls and exposed brick. The direction was black and gold Art Deco, with one clear note: not the black and gold of the early 2000s. Haha. One theme carried through tickets, screens, social, a printed program, kids activity sheets, a time capsule handout, a souvenir magnet, and a photo booth banner.

Celebrate a birthday with your people’s faces

A photo collage inside a big 12 for Movement Church’s 12th birthday.

Movement Church wanted their 12th birthday to feel “celebratory, colorful, and Movement-branded,” not formal. We filled a giant 12 with photos from their church life: community, serving, worship, and memorable moments, past and present. Their pastor loved it so much they used two designs, one on screen and one for social, and added a big printed backdrop of the collage for photos.

Look back long enough to be grateful. Look forward long enough to invite someone in.

More church anniversary and birthday ideas

These come from celebrations we’ve designed for over the years.

  • A newspaper theme. A “church times” front page with headlines from each year. Great for social, slides, and a printed handout.
  • A time capsule. Have people write notes to the church 10 years from now. Give everyone a handout to fill in.
  • A souvenir. Magnets, stickers, or a small printed card people put on the fridge.
  • An anniversary sermon series. Three or four weeks on where God has led you and where you’re going.
  • A photo booth. A branded banner and a few props. It fills your social feed for a week. Our free church photography guide includes a shot list for holidays and special services, plus tips for saving your church’s photo history before the big year.
  • A video. Short interviews with founding members, newer families, and kids.
  • A giving moment. Some churches tie the milestone to a missions gift or a local need.
  • Something for kids. Activity sheets in the same theme so kids feel like part of the day.

Creative director tip

Ask for editable versions of the day-of pieces. Names, menus, and schedules change right up to the event. On our Standard and Premium plans we build custom Canva templates for exactly that, so your team can make last minute edits without waiting on a designer.

Church anniversary questions

How do you celebrate a church anniversary?

Most churches pair a special worship service with something that brings people together, like a meal, a banquet, or a party. Add a milestone logo, a short video of your story, and one thing people can take home.

What’s the difference between a church anniversary and a church birthday?

They mark the same thing. “Anniversary” usually feels more formal and fits milestone years. “Birthday” feels more like a party and fits younger churches and plants. Pick the word that matches the feeling you want.

How far ahead should we plan a church anniversary?

Four to six months for a milestone year with a banquet or merch. Two to three months is enough for a simpler birthday Sunday.

What should a church anniversary logo include?

Usually the number, your existing logo or icon, and a short tagline. Keep it simple so it works on a shirt, a slide, and a magnet.
